AI assistants

Ask your assistant before you spend.

Connect Berm to Claude or another AI assistant and it can send your bank's pending charges to your budget, add bills and goals when you describe them, and ask Berm whether you'll go under before payday. Everything is sealed in the assistant's own code before it's sent, so Berm's server never reads it.

Connect Claude

  1. In Claude, turn on code execution (Settings, then Capabilities). Claude seals what it sends in that code, so without it, it sends nothing.
  2. Add a custom connector (Settings, then Connectors) with the address https://app.berm.money/mcp. Leave the other fields empty.
  3. Press Connect. Your browser opens Berm, which asks once your budget is open. Press Allow.

Connect another assistant

Berm speaks MCP, the open standard for connecting assistants to apps. An assistant that can add a remote MCP connector and run code connects at the same address, and signs in the same way. One that runs on your computer, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI or Codex, can use Berm's program instead, which seals on your computer and can import a bank's file by its name. In the app, Settings, then AI assistants, has the program, a key, and what to paste for each.

What you can ask

Send Berm what my bank shows. Show your assistant a screenshot of your bank and it sends the pending charges and your available balance, which a bank's export leaves out. Berm adds them the next time it's open, with Undo.

Can I afford $120 for dinner? Berm gives the same answer its Afford card would, what's safe to spend a day, and when it would be safe if not now. Nothing else.

Will I go under before payday? When the forecast goes under, how low it gets, and what's safe to spend a day until then.

How does my budget look? The whole summary: your balance, your spending pace, this period's envelopes and your goals. Why? adds what's due in the next 30 days, each bill and payday by category, amount and date, and Berm asks you before it shares that the first time.

Add Netflix, $15.49 monthly on the 3rd. Bills, paychecks, savings goals and which category a merchant goes in. Berm adds them, with Undo.

Import this file. Give your assistant the file your bank exported and Berm imports it as if you'd picked it on the Import card.

In Claude, each of these is also in the menu once Berm is connected.

What it can't do

An assistant can add to your budget, never change or delete what's there. It can't read your transactions, merchants or payees: when it asks, Berm answers with only what the question needs. It moves no money and never connects to your bank.

Berm answers only while it's open on one of your devices, because only your device can read your budget. If your assistant says Berm hasn't answered yet, open Berm and ask it to check again. The first time an assistant asks, Berm asks you whether to allow it.

Your privacy

Your budget is encrypted on your device. The assistant seals what it sends with your budget's public key, and Berm seals its answers to a key only the assistant's code holds, so Berm's server carries both without being able to read either. What you show the assistant, and what Berm answers, is in your conversation with it, under its maker's privacy policy. The privacy page and the security page have the details.

Stop it

In Berm, Settings, then AI assistants: Stop reading keeps an assistant sending but stops its questions being answered, and Remove disconnects it. You can also remove the connector in the assistant. Questions? Support is a message away.
